Every day is a special day at Hillcrest. Hillcrest Progressive School provides Nursery, Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten programs and is licensed by the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services.
Our teachers are selected for their specialized training in Early Childhood Education and our low teacher/student ratios allow our staff to create a warm and secure environment for each child. Nursery children are provided with a 1:8 teacher to child ratio, Junior Kindergarten a 1:10 ratio and Senior Kindergarten a 1:12 ratio.
The curriculum at Hillcrest Progressive School encourages young children to explore their environment and to express themselves freely. Our program is designed so that children are encouraged to use their natural curiosity in a creative approach to problem solving and decision-making. We utilize a "hands o n" approach to learning through play. Our curriculum allows for active and quiet play, group activities and individual growth opportunities. Daily activities include educational circles, creative projects, sensory experiences, music, science, and free-play both indoors and outside on our playground.
An appreciation for Jewish trad itions is incorporated into our program by introducing and celebrating Jewish holidays in a manner that is appealing and meaningful through music, stories, creative activities and field trips.
Extra curricular programs are another integral aspect of the Hillcrest curriculum. Our specialized sports program develops body awareness, coordination, flexibility, balance and team playing skills in a fun, relaxed manner on a weekly basis. Our pottery program for Kindergarten children allows for exploration of tactile media, learning of science concepts, and cause and effect. As well, Senior Kindergarten children participate in drama and gymnastics programs, which enhance each child's sense of self-confidence and success.
